Training for Education
3D Printing Training for Schools & Institutions
Practical 3D printing training designed for schools, educators, and institutions — focused on real-world use, safety, and reliability, not hobby theory.
Each standalone level is half a day. Levels 1 and 2 can also be completed together in one four-hour session.

Foundations of 3D Printing
Half day
A clear introduction to what 3D printing is, how it's used in industry and education, and what's required to request and run prints safely. This level is designed for staff who do NOT operate printers day-to-day but need to understand the technology at a strategic level.
Ideal for: Staff who need a solid understanding without operating the machines — enabling them to confidently request, assess, and scope prints from technical staff.
Audience: Principals, Heads of Department, Teaching Staff, Technical Coordinators
Topics Covered
- Introduction to 3D printing technology and how printers work
- Applications across primary, secondary, tertiary, and post-education
- 3D printing's intersection with modern industries
- Methods of sourcing 3D models: CAD design, 3D scanning, downloading from repositories
- File formats appropriate for 3D printing
- Safety fundamentals and protocols
- Understanding print requests and workflows
- Equipment overview and capabilities
Learning Outcomes
- Understand how 3D printing fits into curriculum and industry
- Confidently request, assess, and scope prints from technical staff
- Know what file formats and model sources are appropriate
- Understand what to expect from a finished print (tolerances, finish, limitations)
- High-level understanding of running costs and material considerations
- Awareness of service intervals, maintenance expectations, and protocols
- Communicate effectively with technical staff
- Make informed decisions about equipment and resources
3D Print Operator
Half day
Hands-on training designed to take participants from no hands-on experience to independent print operation. By the end of this course, every participant will have produced a finished, successful print.
Ideal for: Staff who will operate the printers and need reliable, repeatable results in a classroom or lab environment.
Audience: TAS, STEM, and Technology Teachers, Support Staff, Lab Technicians
Prerequisite: Level 1 (or equivalent conceptual understanding)
Topics Covered
- Identifying file types suitable for 3D printing
- Slicing software fundamentals
- File preparation, orientation, and supports
- Slicing settings for reliable prints
- Material selection by project and application
- Loading and unloading filament/materials
- Machine preparation and pre-print checks
- Best-practice machine handling
- Batch printing for classroom projects
- Cleaning and post-processing finished prints
- Student supervision and safety best practices
- Diagnosing and resolving common print failures
Learning Outcomes
- Identify file types suitable for 3D printing
- Prepare and slice files for reliable printing
- Correctly orient models and apply supports
- Select appropriate materials for each project
- Load and unload filament safely and correctly
- Perform machine preparation and pre-print checks
- Achieve consistent, repeatable print success
- Supervise students safely and effectively
- Diagnose and fix common print failures
- Clean and post-process finished prints to completion
Advanced Operation & Optimisation
Half day
A deep dive into calibration, multi-material printing, fault diagnosis, and fleet reliability. This level focuses on efficiency, optimisation, and advanced production thinking — not beginner or introductory content.
Ideal for: Staff responsible for maintaining printers long-term, training other staff, or running advanced 3D printing programs.
Audience: Lead Technicians, Lab Managers, Senior Educators
Prerequisite: Level 2 (hands-on operational competency)
Topics Covered
- Advanced calibration procedures
- Multi-material and multi-colour workflows
- Cutting and splitting models for optimal printing
- Multi-part printing strategies
- Methods for joining printed parts
- Solvent welding and mechanical joining techniques
- Fault diagnosis frameworks
- Fleet management strategies
- Preventative maintenance schedules
- Performance optimization
- Advanced material handling
- Network and software management
Learning Outcomes
- Maintain printer fleet at peak performance
- Diagnose complex mechanical and software issues
- Cut and split models for optimal print orientation
- Execute multi-part printing strategies effectively
- Join printed parts using solvent welding and mechanical techniques
- Implement multi-material workflows
- Train other staff on proper procedures
- Reduce downtime through preventative maintenance
