Operation stage 3→4
Building an Internal 3D Printing Knowledge Base
Keep current procedures and lessons where the team can find them.
The essentials
Every trained operator carries knowledge that isn't written down. When that person leaves, that knowledge leaves with them. A knowledge base converts institutional memory into a durable operational asset.

Who it is for
Teams with two or more trained operators where critical process knowledge exists but isn't documented.
What this procedure resolves
At Level 3, the team can run jobs independently. Multiple people know what they're doing. But the knowledge is still informal — held in heads, passed through conversation.
The cost shows up at the edges: onboarding takes longer than it should, troubleshooting varies operator to operator, and a resignation creates a disproportionate operational dip.
Follow the procedure
- 1.
Choose one platform and commit to it
Notion, Confluence, a shared folder, even a printed binder. Consistency matters more than format.
- 2.
Start with three documents only
Machine setup guide, active print profiles reference, troubleshooting checklist.
- 3.
Write from current practice, not best practice
Document what operators actually do. Accuracy now; improvement later.
- 4.
Run a quarterly knowledge-share session
One hour, four times a year. Each operator surfaces one process, one failure, one shortcut.
- 5.
Assign one owner to maintain the knowledge base
The owner reviews and updates quarterly, not continuously.
- 6.
Test it with your next new starter
Their first week is the best audit. Every question it doesn't answer becomes the next entry.
