Setting Up a 3D Print Waste Tracking System

Measure waste by material and compare the results.

    The essentials

Sorting waste into bins is not a system. A system produces numbers. Without a monthly weight log per material type, you have no baseline — and without a baseline, you cannot set targets, report progress, or justify a recycling program. An inexperienced operator produces nearly double the CO₂-equivalent emissions of an experienced one for the same part (~0.4 kg vs ~0.2 kg CO₂-eq).

~0.4 vs ~0.2 kg CO₂-eq — Emissions difference between inexperienced and experienced operator for the same part

    — Operator impact studies

30–50% — Support material reduction achievable by switching to tree supports on suitable geometries

    — Slicer optimisation data

    Who it is for

Operations teams or studios generating regular print waste who are already sorting into categories but have no log, no baselines, and no review process.

    What this procedure resolves

Waste is being sorted but not measured. It accumulates in bins and gets disposed of when full or when someone notices. No scheduled weigh-ins, no log.

Without formal tracking, no reduction target is achievable, no recycling partner can quantify your volume, and no sustainability claim can be substantiated.

    Follow the procedure

    1. 1.

Create a waste log spreadsheet with four columns

DATE / MATERIAL TYPE / CATEGORY (failed, support, purge) / WEIGHT (g). One row per weigh-in.

    2. 2.

Weigh each bin on the same day each month

Consistency matters more than precision. Monthly minimum; weekly for high-volume operations.

    3. 3.

      Record material type separately

PLA and PETG have different downstream options. Mixed logs create mixed waste streams.

    4. 4.

Calculate a monthly total in grams

The first month is your baseline. Not a target — a number you didn't have before.

    5. 5.

Integrate waste logging into the job log

Waste tracking belongs alongside job tracking. Add a WASTE WEIGHT field to your job log.

    6. 6.

Set a 90-day reduction target from your baseline

Realistic first target: reduce total waste by 10% over three months. The lever is usually support material reduction via slicer settings.

    7. 7.

Label bins with material type, not just category

PLA FAILED PRINTS and PETG FAILED PRINTS are separate bins.

    8. 8.

Record spool weights at start and end of each roll

Material consumed minus material in finished parts = waste by definition.

STANDARD PRINT CO. Products That Help

    RECYCLING PROGRAM

STANDARD PRINT CO. collects sorted PLA and PETG waste. Volume data from your log determines collection frequency.

    ECO SPOOL SYSTEM

Refill cartridges replace single-use spools. ~200 g of spool plastic eliminated per roll.

Sorting and Reducing 3D Printing Waste

Set up bins and start collecting before logging

    Joining a Filament Recycling Program

Once you have volume data, connect with a recycling partner

Creating a Simple 3D Print Job Log

Waste tracking belongs in the same system as job tracking
