Building a Measurable 3D Printing Sustainability Program

Report measured waste and recycling with a clear basis for each claim.

    The essentials

Recycling is happening but the data is not captured in reportable form. A formal sustainability program converts actions into evidence: kg recycled per month, CO₂ avoided per quarter, recycled content percentage. These numbers are the difference between a process and a commitment you can stand behind with clients and stakeholders.

3.29 kg CO₂/kg — Savings per kilogram switching from virgin PLA to rPLA

    — Lifecycle assessment data

197 kg CO₂-eq — Annual avoidance for one mid-size studio switching and recycling

    — Program impact modelling

~200 g — Plastic waste per spool hub, eliminated entirely by ECO SPOOL SYSTEM

    — Product measurement data

    Who it is for

Operations with a functioning recycling partnership and at least three months of waste and consumption data, ready to formalise reporting.

    What this procedure resolves

The recycling program is running. STANDARD PRINT CO. is collecting waste. Some rPLA or rPETG is being used. But no one has consolidated the numbers into a monthly sustainability report.

Without formal tracking, the program cannot be used in client documentation, cannot be included in B Corp-adjacent reporting, and cannot anchor a public-facing environmental commitment.

    Follow the procedure

    1. 1.

Calculate your monthly CO₂ avoided from recycling

      For PLA: 3.29 kg CO₂/kg saved (5.76 − 2.47). For PETG: 3.30 kg CO₂/kg saved (5.85 − 2.55). Multiply by monthly weight recycled.

    2. 2.

Track recycled filament consumption as a percentage

(kg rPLA + rPETG used) ÷ (total kg filament used) × 100. Target: 30% recycled content within 12 months.

    3. 3.

Add a SUSTAINABILITY column to your monthly operations report

Three fields: KG RECYCLED / KG CO₂ AVOIDED / RECYCLED CONTENT %. Three cells in the existing log.

    4. 4.

Set a 12-month target across each metric

Example: recycle 80% of sorted waste, achieve 25% recycled content, reduce total waste by 15% from baseline.

    5. 5.

Integrate sustainability metrics into staff training sign-offs

Waste sorting and material logging are operational procedures that belong in formal training records.

    6. 6.

Review and publish sustainability data quarterly

Internal review minimum. Data should be retrievable within 24 hours of a request.

    7. 7.

Establish a spool waste elimination target

At 200 g per spool × 15 spools/month = 3 kg/month of avoidable plastic waste. Set an ECO SPOOL transition date.

    8. 8.

Model a full lifecycle number for your most-printed part

Calculate material weight × CO₂/kg for current filament, then recalculate with rPLA/rPETG. The difference is the environmental case.

STANDARD PRINT CO. Products That Help

    rPLA & rPETG FILAMENT

    90% post-consumer recycled content. rPLA: 2.47 kg CO₂/kg. rPETG: 2.55 kg CO₂/kg. Production-tested.

    ECO SPOOL SYSTEM

Eliminates single-use spool waste. Refill cartridges fit the same reusable hub.
