    Operation stage 3→4

    Joining a Filament Recycling Program

Confirm accepted materials, sort them and arrange collection.

    The essentials

3D printing filament waste classified as Type 7 plastic is not accepted in kerbside or commercial recycling in Australia. Switching from virgin PLA to recycled PLA (rPLA) reduces CO₂ emissions by 57% per kilogram: from 5.76 kg CO₂/kg down to 2.47 kg CO₂/kg. Recycled PETG delivers a 56% reduction, from 5.85 kg CO₂/kg to 2.55 kg CO₂/kg. The loop only closes if there is a collection and reprocessing partner.

    Who it is for

Studios and operations generating at least 0.5 kg of sorted PLA or PETG waste per month, ready to connect with a formal recycling partner.

    What this procedure resolves

You are sorting and logging waste. The process is working. But sorted bins are still going through general waste because there is no collection partner.

Every kilogram of PLA to landfill instead of reprocessing represents 5.76 kg CO₂/kg that could have been reduced to 2.47 kg CO₂/kg. At 2 kg PLA waste/month, that's 6.58 kg CO₂ avoidance per month — compounding.

    Follow the procedure

    1. 1.

Confirm your monthly waste volume by material

Review the last three months of your waste log. Two months of consistent data minimum before contacting a partner.

    2. 2.

Separate PLA and PETG into dedicated collection bags

STANDARD PRINT CO.'s recycling program accepts separately. Cross-contamination disqualifies a batch. Clean separation is a hard requirement.

    3. 3.

Contact STANDARD PRINT CO. to register for the filament recycling program

Provide monthly volume estimate per material type. STANDARD PRINT CO. arranges collection based on volume and location.

    4. 4.

Switch at least one material line to recycled filament

rPLA and rPETG close the cycle: your waste becomes your feedstock. STANDARD PRINT CO.'s rPLA is 90% post-consumer recycled content.

    5. 5.

Switch to the ECO SPOOL SYSTEM for new rolls

At 200 g per spool hub and 10–20 spools/month, that's 2–4 kg/month of plastic waste from packaging alone.

    6. 6.

      Log recycled material consumption separately

Track rPLA/rPETG as its own line in your materials log. Creates data for recycled content reporting.

    7. 7.

      Update your material traceability records

The lifecycle of a filament now includes its recycled origin.
